Westercon Hotel Rooms Still Available
As announced on the Westercon 64 website, there are still hotel rooms available at the Fairmont Hotel in San José for next weekend's Westercon. There were apparently rumors that the hotel was sold out, and we even saw some people assuming that the convention was sold out. Neither of these is true. There are hotel rooms available, and Westercon doesn't have a membership cap or limit. (Maybe someone was confusing Westercon with the World Fantasy Convention?) Anyway, if you're coming to Westercon (and we hope you are), make sure you book a hotel room so as to have the complete convention experience without having to worry about the drive home at night.

Westercon 64 Announces Special Events

This Fourth of July weekend sees Westercon 64, the 2011 West Coast Science Fantasy Conference, coming to downtown San Jose. Westercon 64 will include several special events in its schedule in addition to traditional SF/F convention programming. Among the special events planned is a performance of a radio-style play written by artist guests of honor Phil and Kaja Foglio, a themed Saturday afternoon tea with writer guest of honor Patricia McKillip, a focus event on the guests moderated by Terry Bisson from the SF in SF reading series, and an SF/F-themed game show. The convention will also include two Regency Dances and the Westercon Masquerade costume contest.

Convention Room Rate Expiring Soon
If you've haven't already booked your room at the Fairmont, we strongly urge you to book your room as soon as possible, so that we can help guarantee you the convention room rate. After our hotel room block expires, we cannot guarantee our convention rate.

Also, we have heard that some people are having problems with booking shoulder nights such as the Thursday night before the convention. If you run into this problem or any other booking problem, please book your Friday through Sunday (or later) stay and then write to hotel@westercon64.org and we'll promptly help you work with the hotel to get the rest of your nights booked in.

Check out the convention's Local Color & Dining Guide for tips on area restaurants, both those downtown within walking distance (of which there are many) and also those that are worth making a more extended dinner expedition.

Room Sharing
Although posting to westercon2011sj is one way to find other fans who might want to split a hotel room at Westercon 64, the convention has also announced Room Sharing page on their web site where people trying to connect for a room share can post comments. Of course, the convention isn't responsible for your room arrangements, and only provides the comment space as a courtesy to its members.

We've Got a Little (Dealers') List
The Westercon 64 Dealers' Room is now full and is accepting waiting-list applications. A list of confirmed dealers is now on the web site. This list will probably change as dealers that have been accepted but whose paperwork hasn't cleared are confirmed.

Of course, Westercon 64 can't guarantee the appearance of any dealer, so the list is subject to change without notice. Also, if you have questions about the dealers' room, it's not a great idea to post them here or on the web site, as they aren't monitored by the dealers' room coordinator and your questions will be delayed until they get forwarded. Write to the address on the web page with questions: those e-mails go to the dealers' room coordinator, David W. Clark.

Single-day admission rates have been announced as follows:
Friday: $30
Saturday: $40
Sunday: $40

Hint Before Booking Hotel Room
In-room internet access at the Fairmont hotel is free if you are a member of the hotel's President's Club frequent-traveler program, so you might want to sign up before making your reservation. If you've already made your reservation without an FPC number, you should be able to register for FPC and then go back and add the number to your reservation, or you can provide it at check-in.

Unfortunately, internet access in the function areas is not available. There's not even a pay-as-you-go option; we'd either have to pay a huge amount to turn on the access to everyone, or have no access. Other conventions with more members and resources have paid the four-figure sum, but we're not in a position to do so.

We've written about the Internet Access at the Fairmont on the convention's Internet Access page.
